EVERYTHING WE CREATE MIRRORS OUR INNER SELF.
There have been times in my life when I have truly struggled -- for example times when I was betrayed by others. Once a female friend met me for lunch and immediately launched a verbal attack, telling me how she could no longer be my friend. She said she was too jealous. I was deeply hurt for we had been friends a long time. Other circumstances created deep depression, like the time I moved back from sunny Switzerland to Pittsburgh with my first child and had to live in a dark duplex near the ongoing race riots. (These stories are told in detail in my upcoming book Painting Life: My Creative Journey Through Trauma.)
Still, there were other times when I felt intense joy, serenity and peace. Recently my husband Tom and I were walking on the beach at sunset when the warm, soft air caressed my golden sun-lit skin, and I felt as free as the seagulls surrounding me. The spirit of all three of these incidents are recorded in some way, either via my journals, my artwork, or my photographs.
ARTWORK EMBODIES ALL OF OUR EMOTIONAL STATES.
AND THEN REFLECTS THESE STATES BACK TO US.
What's so interesting about the creative process is, that when I am engaged in the process of creating art, I'm not aware I am making something that reflects my inner self. However once that piece of artwork is complete, I stand back and study it. I'm always astounded at what I'm saying about myself. This clearly shows up in my body of work I call photo-paintings. These works combine my photography and my watercolor painting. During this time of my life, I was feeling free, exuberant, with lots of energy. It felt as though I was transcending some dark times and moving toward the light. Looking back at this body of work I see that it represents moving upward and outward -- moving beyond difficult times. To me they feel spiritual.
EXPRESSING OUR SPIRIT THROUGH CREATIVITY IS A GIFT TO OURSELVES.
WHEN WE USE CREATIVITY, WE ARE:
Ø CONNECTING TO OUR INNER SELVES
Ø AFFIRMING WHO WE ARE -- OUR VALUES, INTERESTS AND PRIORITIES
Ø GROUNDING OURSELVES WHEN TIMES ARE CHAOTIC
Ø MENDING OLD WOUNDS
Ø CLAIMING OUR PLACE IN THE WORLD
No matter what our creative projects are -- whether artistic, business oriented, about volunteer work, or as a parent and homemaker -- what we choose to do and how we do it always reflects our beliefs, values, emotions, etc. -- even if we are not aware we are doing so. Because of this, the more we can bring to our awareness, and then make conscious choices, the better. (Refer my blog posts on Making Conscious Choices.)
